US ARMY SGT Earl Schalin was born on March 11, 1928, and served in the US Army Core of Engineers. Earl was drafted into the Army in the summer of 1946 after he graduated from Highline High School in Seattle, WA. Earl was shipped off to Boot Camp with the Army Corps of Engineers in Fayetteville, NC. After boot camp, Earl was selected to work in administration. Earl was then assigned to serve at the Army troop staging area at Camp Stoneman in Pittsburg, CA., just east of San Francisco. The base had a railroad yard that accepted troop cars from all over the country and prepared to ship servicemen and women overseas via the San Francisco Port of Embarkation. Earl was also shipped overseas and served with the 340th Engineering Construction Battalion in Inchon, Korea, at the Kimpo airport. The unit was occupied with constructing runways and airfield infrastructure. Continuing to work in administration, Earl was a company clerk, assisting service members transferring in and out of the country to the unit. Occasionally he pulled guard duty watching over construction equipment, to include rock-crushing assets. Additionally, he was responsible for the general duties of being a soldier overseas in the Army. Earl was promoted to Sergeant during his deployment to Korea. Earl returned to San Francisco in December of 1948, and enjoyed the New Year celebrations, marking his homecoming. After being discharged from active duty, Earl went on to pursue higher education, utilizing his GI Bill benefits enrolling at the University of Michigan where he majored in Business Administration.
