FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I donate?

I have created a way to accept donations to grow the project, use the WWII Veterans Portrait Series Go Fund Me.

Where are you located?

I live in the San Diego area but have traveled to many locations to interview and photograph Veterans.

How Long is an Appointment?

Appointments usually last an hour. But please free up time for Mickey to set up lights and cameras, hold the interview, and take some still photographers for in the project.

Do you accept reservations?

Yes is the simple answer to the question. Each appointment is set up as an individual session. Group sessions have been set up when I visited a senior living facility or many of the California Veterans Homes.

US Navy BTFN Korean War Carl Harlow was born on December 16th, 1936, and grew up in Petalman, CA. Carl graduated from high school, volunteering to serve in the US Navy and enlisting on September 13th, 1954. Carl was a “Kiddy Cruiser,” joining at 17, and was out of the service at 21. He attended Basic Training at San Diego Recruit Training Center, CA. He reported aboard the USS De Haven (DD-727), an Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer. Carl was assigned to the Engineering Division forward boiler room as a Boiler Operator Helper. While working in the Boiler room on the M-type boiler, he learned all the jobs and duties, first as a messenger watch, then a burner man, and eventually working as a check valve watch, completing his qualifications as a top watch. During his time on board, he made three Western Pacific Deployments. He enjoyed liberty in all the regular port calls, including Hawaii, the Philippines, Hong Kong, and even one trip to Melbourne, Australia. Carl fondly remembers receiving his Golden Shellback, crossing the Equator and the international date line simultaneously. BTFN Carl Harlow ended his enlistment on 1 November 1957 at the end of his obligated service.
