FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I donate?

I have created a way to accept donations to grow the project, use the WWII Veterans Portrait Series Go Fund Me.

Where are you located?

I live in the San Diego area but have traveled to many locations to interview and photograph Veterans.

How Long is an Appointment?

Appointments usually last an hour. But please free up time for Mickey to set up lights and cameras, hold the interview, and take some still photographers for in the project.

Do you accept reservations?

Yes is the simple answer to the question. Each appointment is set up as an individual session. Group sessions have been set up when I visited a senior living facility or many of the California Veterans Homes.

US Army SGT Korean War Donald Hayes was born on February 18th, 1932, and grew up in Paonia, Colorado. Donald graduated from Paonia High School and enlisted in the US Army on 11 Feb 1953. He attended Basic Training, followed by three months at the Joint Culinary Center at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Here he specialized as a baker. Donald worked in the back shop in Puson with the 130th Quartermaster Bakery Company  (Mobile), where they had ovens that were on wheels. They could move them when the unit moved around. The ovens ran all day, and he could fit about 12 loves of bread into each oven. Donald served one tour in Korea with the Army, returning to the States and deactivating on 16 Dec 1954. Donald returned to active duty quickly, this time enlisting in the US Navy and serving aboard the USS Bausell (DD-845), a Gearing-class destroyer of the United States Navy. Donald was assigned to the Supply Department Bakeshop. Donald's favorite thing to bake was cherry pies. He remembers one time on the ship when some engineers working just below the bake shop spirited away a pie from the ledge by the door while his back was turned. He bet they ate it so fast and hot that they burnt themselves, but the pan was returned the next day. Donald also served a tour onboard the USS Midway (CV-41). The bake shop on board the aircraft carrier was far larger than the ones he had worked in on the destroyer. MS1 Donald Hayes married his wife Etsuko in Japan while stationed there.
