FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I donate?

I have created a way to accept donations to grow the project, use the WWII Veterans Portrait Series Go Fund Me.

Where are you located?

I live in the San Diego area but have traveled to many locations to interview and photograph Veterans.

How Long is an Appointment?

Appointments usually last an hour. But please free up time for Mickey to set up lights and cameras, hold the interview, and take some still photographers for in the project.

Do you accept reservations?

Yes is the simple answer to the question. Each appointment is set up as an individual session. Group sessions have been set up when I visited a senior living facility or many of the California Veterans Homes.

United States Marine Corps Corporal (CPL) Korean War Barney “Zack” Zacharias was born in San Francisco on April 8, 1936. His family moved to Susanville, California, when he was two. He graduated from Susanville High School. Right after graduation, Zack enlisted in the Marine Corps to escape his small hometown of less than ten thousand.  Zack and his friend Jimmy were going through a battery of tests and evaluations at the recruiting center when Zack noticed one line was much shorter. This was the line for the Marine Corps. Zack got in that line and talked to the recruiter, who checked his tests and said he would be a fine fit for the Corps. Zack reported to Basic Training in San Diego at MCRD on June 8, 1957.  He graduated from boot camp and was assigned to report for duty in Korea.  The ship offloaded Zack and his fellow Marines at the staging point base, Camp Hauge, Okinawa.  Private Zacharias was immediately assigned to duty at Camp Hauge, Okinawa, and never left this duty assignment until the end of his enlistment.  Private Zacharias was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 12th Marine Regiment, Motor Transport unit. He drove a 5-ton truck around the mountain for about a year, moving artillery pieces. General Robert B. Twitchell, the commander of the 12th Marines, asked Zack if he would be his driver.  Zack loved the plush duty of driving a 1957 Chevy, a staff car, to get the General to his appointments, wearing his dress uniform, and having to shine his shoes every morning. This duty lasted two years, with hundreds of hours waiting for the general. Zack filled these hours with history books and novels.  Zack finished his assignment in Japan and returned to El Toro, California, to attend Admin Clerk School in May 1958.   Zack was assigned as the driver to the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing commander. The unit returned to Japan on deployment after a few years, when Zack volunteered to extend his enlistment to the end of the deployment. CPL Zacharias’s six-and-a-half-year service in the Marine Corps ended on November 21, 1960, when he was honorably discharged. Zack was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and two Good Conduct Medals. With his father’s failing health, Zack returned to Susanville and used his GI Bill to attend Butcher’s School in Toledo, Ohio.  He returned to California and worked in that industry for many grocery stores, from independent to corporate stores, and he also cut meat at a few cattle ranches.  Zach was reacquainted with his high school sweetheart Joyce, they were married and had two boys.
