FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I donate?

I have created a way to accept donations to grow the project, use the WWII Veterans Portrait Series Go Fund Me.

Where are you located?

I live in the San Diego area but have traveled to many locations to interview and photograph Veterans.

How Long is an Appointment?

Appointments usually last an hour. But please free up time for Mickey to set up lights and cameras, hold the interview, and take some still photographers for in the project.

Do you accept reservations?

Yes is the simple answer to the question. Each appointment is set up as an individual session. Group sessions have been set up when I visited a senior living facility or many of the California Veterans Homes.

US NAVY ATN2 Vietnam Robert Sandstorm was born on June 24, 1942, and joined the Navy on January 13, 1964. After graduating from high school, he made the decision to serve in the Navy. His journey began at Recruit Training Command in San Diego, followed by training at Aviation Electronics Technician (AT) A School at Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Memphis. There, he honed his skills in performing intermediate-level maintenance on aviation electronic components. Robert’s first assignment was with the VR-8Transport Squadron, stationed at NAS Moffett Field in Mountain View, CA. He was responsible for training and maintaining in-flight pilot-reported electronic issues. In the summer of 1967, the squadron was decommissioned, and Robert sought new orders. He transferred to NAS North Island, where he served with the “Red Griffins” of Sea Control Squadron Three Eight (VS-38). In this role, he worked on the Grumman S-2F Tracker and served as a Combat Aircrew member, operating the semi-active sonar (JULIE) with the AN/AQA-3 and later AQA-4 detection sets during deployments, including operations on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin off the coast of Viet Nam. The USS Bennington (CV-20), on which Robert served, also made a memorable deployment to Australia, commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the Allied victory in the Battle of the Coral Sea. Robert’s active duty came to a close on September 13, 1968, at his Navy enlistments end.
