United States Navy Lieutenant Commander Vietnam War Lieutenant Commander David Van Patten served as a Supply Corps officer from 1960 to 1982. David attended Officer Training School and received his commission. Like all Naval Supply officers, he attended the Navy Supply Corps School (NSCS), located at Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island. A 20-week Basic Qualification Course is required for all new Supply officers to prepare for duties in food service, retail, supply management, and disbursing. David then reported to his first duty station. He was assigned to serve in-country with NAVFORV (Naval Forces Vietnam) from 1969 to 1970. In this military assistance advisory role, he documented and programmed the delivery of supplies, munitions, and boats for river battles in the Mekong Delta. David was next assigned to duty on the USS Tripoli (LPH-10), a helicopter carrier. As the Supply Officer. He was responsible for a department of approximately 120 personnel and managed all ship requirements, including food service, repair parts, and computer systems. He made multiple deployments to Vietnam while stationed on board the Tripoli. David ended his service in 1982, concluding a 22-year career, retiring as a Lieutenant Commander.
