FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Where can I donate?

I have created a way to accept donations to grow the project, use the WWII Veterans Portrait Series Go Fund Me.

Where are you located?

I live in the San Diego area but have traveled to many locations to interview and photograph Veterans.

How Long is an Appointment?

Appointments usually last an hour. But please free up time for Mickey to set up lights and cameras, hold the interview, and take some still photographers for in the project.

Do you accept reservations?

Yes is the simple answer to the question. Each appointment is set up as an individual session. Group sessions have been set up when I visited a senior living facility or many of the California Veterans Homes.

US Army SGT World War 2 John Edward Rains was named after a movie star and was born on Oct 13, 1923. John served in the US Army as a Quartermaster in World War II. His honorable service began in 1942.  WWII Quartermasters provided Class I, II, III, and IV items (food, clothing and equipment, petroleum, and general supplies) to Allied troops throughout their areas of responsibility. At the height of the war, Quartermasters provided over 70,000 different supply items and more than 24 million meals daily. When the war was over, they had recovered and buried nearly a quarter of a million Soldiers in temporary cemeteries around the world. John attended boot camp in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and then basic Quartermaster training at Fort Lee, Virginia, today called Fort Gregg-Adams. This instruction program provided approximately eleven weeks of academic training and six weeks of field maneuvers and military training, making them as qualified as any infantrymen to operate in the field. John was first stationed at Hickam Air Force Base and Wheeler Air Field in Hawaii but was quickly transferred to Saipan in the Northern Mariana Islands, Philippine Sea. John fought in the Battle of Saipan in July of 1944 and remained on station as a Gas Quartermaster on the island for nine months.  John had amassed the necessary service points, completing his obligations to the Army, and was honorably released from military service on Oct 6, 1945.
