US Air Air Corps SGT World War II Wallace Chavkin, born on 27 March 1922, served in the US Army during World War II as a pharmacy technician in the medical corps. Wallace enlisted on 8 May 1943 and shipped out for Basic Training. He completed 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 22 weeks of Advanced Individual Training at the Medical Education and Training Campus, earning the MOS-68Q as a pharmacy technician. Wallace served with Company D, 5th Medical Battalion, US Army, supporting the 5th Infantry Division throughout Europe, including Normandy and Germany. Sergeant Chavkin served in campaigns including Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes. On 9 November 1944, Company D of the 5th Medical Battalion, assigned to the 5th Infantry Division ("Red Diamond"), was actively engaged in the renewed assault on the fortified city of Metz, France. Sargent Chavkin was awarded a Bronze Star for an operation against the enemy on 9 November 1944 near Pont-À-Mousson, Lorraine, France. He volunteered to lead a team that waded across the 350-ft, ice-filled, shoulder-high Mousson River at night in blackout conditions during active combat. They secured a tow line to transfer supplies and 16 seriously wounded soldiers to relative safety across the river, where emergency surgery would save their lives. Wallace Chavkin rose to the rank of Sergeant before being honorably discharged on 4 Oct 1945. At 98 years old, Wallace lives in West Palm Beach, near his daughter Carol, and joined me at the Palm Beach Photo Center for an interview and photos.
